Rosy Merlini and Sergio Duvalloni met in Berlin in 1979 and have been together since. In 1986 they decided

to move to Brussels and open the Sounds jazz club. They started by programming two concerts a week, mainly blues and rock, but from 1988 they booked more and more jazz at the rate of 6 concerts per week. Some of the foremost jazz musicians from Belgium and abroad have performed at the Sounds : Aka Moon, Bobo Stenson, Charlie Mariano, David Kikoski, David Linx,  Deborah Brown, Hein Van den Geyn, Joe LaBarbera, Joe Lovano, John Abercrombie, Kenny Werner,  Kris Defoort,  Lee Konitz,  Mark Turner, Paolo Fresu, Philip Catherine, Rosario Giuliani, Steve Houben and many others. But Sergio Duvalloni also has a fine nose for young talent :  groups like for example the Brussels Jazz Orchestra or Octurn were given the opportunity during their early days to perform in the Sounds on a regular basis which enabled them to develop, and since then have gained a solid reputation on the international scene. With the “master sessions”, where budding artists have the occasion to perform with their seniors and get acquainted with the scene, the Sounds contributes as well to the continuity of jazz.

The Sounds Jazz Club celebrates it’s 20th Birthday in April 2006 !

Extract from an interview in Zone02 :

- Question : A jazz club which has been running for nearly 20 years, that’s quite exceptional in Brussels. What’s your secret?
- Sergio Duvalloni: First of all you have to like this job. You have to be present all the time and believe in what you’re doing, from the first day.  It’s like for the musicians : if you want to become a star,  you have to give everything you have. For a jazz club it’s identical.

Furthermore you have to vary your program, but also need some fixed dates; on Monday we have the “master sessions”, on Wednesday latin music. This is important for a club
